Norman Foster once said, “Design is so simple, that’s why it is so complicated”. Tying this interpretation to the minimalistic design that adheres to Foster’s principles of complexity and simplicity, it can be inferred that although minimalism may sometimes appear to be simple, it is a sophisticated product of architecture and design.
The Essence of Minimalism
Minimalism is not a mere design style; it is a way of living with integrity. In this, the way to be decidedly minimalist is the elimination of the unnecessary and the sharpening of the focus in terms of the most important things. In my practice, I have found minimalism not only to be creating empty spaces, but the fine relationship of form and function.
Architectural Minimalism
As an architect, I usually do my approach to simple geometric forms and clear line in the simplest form. I am very much into open spaces and the natural light that arises from that. Large glass panels not only allow light to penetrate the inside but also the use of see-through materials links the indoor area to the outside world.
My designs are generally limited by the materials I usually choose. The three main materials that I utilize are concrete, glass, and steel, which I regard as simple and pragmatic. It is surprising to me that these materials which are mainly used in architectural structures could also create a visual impact which is so much admired.
Minimalist Interior Design
There is a saying “the less, the better” which I always keep in mind when I design interior spaces. I work with the idea of creating spaces that are not only physically clean but also withdraw the calmness and tranquility from the owner. No furniture pieces or decor items are used aimlessly if they don’t fit into the overall look and style.
Minimalist interiors seem to be color-free spaces at first glance. I prefer to keep to the earthy cool shades as white, gray, and various tones of earth. The white color helps to open up the space and relax the mind, and it projects a sense of cleanliness. Seldom, I might bring in a color feel through a single artwork or a furniture piece to diversify the area and deepen the experience.
Functional Beauty
The most important thing for me in a minimalistic design is to be able to provide both aesthetics and usability through the combination of minimalism with functionality, and the minimalism of each object. Every element of a minimalist area has its use. I always come up with its built-in shelves that have the dual purpose a Clutter-Free Environment is desirable besides the storage it provides. Opting for integrating multi-functional fashion-adornments that make the whole environment look far more minimal is also a good choice.
The Role of Texture
In recent years, in architecture, whenever minimalism is disputed, it is followed by the slogan “Making the most with the least”. From this point of view, my minimal concepts which I apply for home interiors are inspired by this vision and it is no wonder that major corporations are getting involved in the struggle to offer general ecologic services. A technological industry leader mentioned having a vision of becoming even greener than the very same nature thanks to cooperation on the treatment of waste.
Lighting in Minimalist Design
Lighting is very main in the minimalist kind of the design. I totally support natural light as it is helpful even more for those getting the feeling of light from it. Sometimes the artificial lighting like simple more sculptural pieces of decoration can not only light the area but also grab the attention so much that they think “Wow, what an amazing piece of decoration!”. Recessed lighting fixtures are also frequently used to get rid of the intrusive parts that are a part of the look of the empty space.
The Challenges of Minimalism
Designing for a minimalist style can become quite a complicated procedure. The process of designing minimalism involves a detailed study of each element and the courage to sacrifice without any remorse. Minimalism is more of a thought-process by means of which the individual might select the things he/she desires to create the space which suit the best.
Conclusion
Minimalism design that is introduced either into the exterior or interior environment is about forming spaces which are both beautiful and practical. It is more of the subject of making a difference with simplicity than on the area. The vital stance of my minimalist artwork, and the society judging it, is that it could easily affect the way spaces are used and the wider sense of wellbeing.
Keep in mind, in minimalist design, each and every element should show its presence by informing the rest, it is not about the total number of items included, but it is about how the things get the proper balance between the functional and the beautiful. This is the authentic art of minimalism.
